HILLTOP STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN LOCAL CHESS TOURNAMENT
Two members of the HILLTOP Knights Chess Club recently participated in a chess tournament at the San Diego Chess Club in Balboa Park. Asher and Kai Macias played several rounds of chess in the tournament which had students from several states in grades Kindergarten through high school partipate. Asher is a 6th grader in Mr. Alcos' class and Kai is a 5th grader in Mr. Rickett's class.
"It was great that they took on the challenge of competing in this first class tournament," said Mr. Kircher who in in charge of the HILLTOP Knight's Chess Club. "They did a great job and had a lot of fun as well."
Research shows that chess has a positive affect on student performance in the classroom and also helps develop qualities like patience and strategic planning.
The Hilltop Knight's Chess Club meets every Tuesday during upper grade lunch recess. Anyone interested in participating can contact Mr. Kircher in room 801.
