Protecting Animals is Everyone's Responsibility
By Breanna Ugalde
Do you believe that the vulnerable should be protected? I think the ones without a voice should have a person who will protect them; people who will be their defenders. Every ten seconds an animal is either being harmed or abused. Many people do not have an understanding of how important this concern can be. Neglect is a form of animal abuse and some people do not care whether their animal is on the street on a cold day. Others make them live in harsh conditions and if they can no longer afford the pet, they feel they have no choice to put them out on the street. Most animal abuse is not reported even though all over the world animals are being harmed.
It seems not many seem to care, but one Hilltop student and family did something to help improve an animal's life
''My father and I were downtown and there was not many people around. However, there were enough people to notice that this dog was hurting, said Yza Merino, a sixth grade student. "There were chains around him the size of a man's fist with a huge master lock. I saw that his back was sagging and it seemed that the harness was so tight that you could not even put your fingers through it. That’s when we knew we had to do something for this abandoned dog. We brought him home and my dad used bolt cutters to get the chains off him. It was a long process and his skin was very sore. There were bruises where the chains had been. Once the chains were off, he seemed to be immediately more free and happier. Whenever we would sit down, he would come to my lap and put his head under my arm. For a while there were bald spots where the chains had been but eventually his hair began to grow back. He just wanted to be loved and hugged. We decided to keep him and we named him Hums. I'm proud to report that two months later that he is a nice, big, healthy dog," concluded Yza.
In a different case, another Hilltop family helped an animal in need. This time it was a bird that needed help. Eddie Ruelas Nunez, a sixth grade student saw a bird in his front yard that had been hurt.
''The bird couldn’t fly and it was suffering. My dad and I got a box and put the bird inside. We kept it for a little while and eventually took it to a vet. Once, the bird recovered, we watched it fly away.”
Acts of kindness to animals like these can make a big difference in the world!
